Character and Why It Is So Important in the Recruiting Process

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. ~John Wooden

When a coach recruits a player he or she needs to know that they can trust that student-athlete both on and off of the field.  Without this trust it can be a challenge and tremendous time suck if the coach or assistant coach has to go around and babysit.  With NCAA eligibility rules that give us an idea as to what character flaws are acceptable and those that are not and recruit those kids that have a proven history of not breaking those rules in the past or who have already learned their lessons.  So, can coaches recruit kids that have character flaws?  Sure, but they need to know the character flaws/challenges that they have the bandwidth to deal with and the ones that will bring their team down.
